The Pitt basketball team got into the recruiting race for Ryan Luther a little late. But the Panthers ended up finishing first.

Luther, a 6-foot-8 senior guard/forward at Hampton High School and one of the top players in Western Pennsylvania, made a verbal commitment Thursday night to Pitt. Duquesne and Dayton were his other top choices and he also visited George Washington.

Pitt offered Luther a scholarship only last month.

"They recruited me lightly at the beginning, but toward the end of the summer they really picked up their recruitment," Luther said. "It's pretty hard to turn down a school I've liked since I was a little kid. The opportunity to play in your hometown and have your friends and family be at games is nice, and they have a great coach, great team and play in one of the best, if not the best, conference in the country."

Luther was a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 last season. He has a twin brother, Collin, who also has some Division I scholarship offers. Pitt has not made an offer to Collin.
