Spartans hold off Brashear boys in City League, 87-84

There is not a player on the Schenley roster who knows what it feels like to lose a game to a City League rival.

The Spartans almost found out last night, but they managed to hold on for an 87-84 win at Brashear.

The victory was Schenley's 69th consecutive against City League opponents. Its last loss came in the 2004 championship game to Perry.

Deandre Kane scored a game-high 38 points for Schenley (18-2, 12-0), which opened up a 56-33 halftime lead before the Bulls (13-8, 8-5) rallied in the third quarter to outscore the Spartans, 31-11, and pull within three.

Brashear's Ed Tinker scored 19 points to push his career total to 1,507. John Wetzel had 23 points and Jermaine Robinson added 22.

Embry Williams scored 17 points and Greg Blair 15 for the Spartans.

Class AAAA boys' highlights

• Dante Anglin scored 13 points to lead North Hills (15-7, 5-5) to a key, 41-35 Section 3 win against Seneca Valley (14-7, 6-5).

Gateway (9-13, 5-6) clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2002 with a 62-43 Section 2 win against Woodland Hills (4-16, 1-9).

Class AAA boys' highlights

Indiana (15-5, 7-2) converted 13 of its 14 free throws in overtime to slip past Valley (13-8, 6-4), 77-70. Kevin Stapleton had 19 points for the Indians.

Keystone Oaks (12-9, 7-1) outscored South Park, 28-5, in the fourth quarter to erase a two-point deficit and record a 78-56 Section 4 win over the host Eagles (8-12, 3-5). Corey Bellovich and Ryan Hart scored 18 points for Keystone Oaks.

Class AA boys' highlights

• Todd Thomas scored 11 points, dished out 10 assists, and had 5 steals to lead No. 1 Beaver Falls (16-3, 10-0) to a 69-42 Section 6 win against Center (13-6, 6-4).

Monessen (17-4, 12-0) tightened its grip on first place in Section 5 with its 94-41 win against Waynesburg (3-16, 1-11). The Greyhounds already have clinched a playoff spot.

Burgettstown (15-5, 8-4) upset Washington (16-6, 10-2) 49-45 in Section 5. Brenden Bongiorni led the Blue Devils with 15 points.

• No. 3 Aliquippa (14-6) raced to a 20-4 first-quarter lead in its 51-34 non-section win against Class AAAA Peters Township (14-7). Gerald Boykin led the way with 12 points.

Class A boys' highlights

• No. 1 Serra (19-1, 10-0) was held to well below its season average of 75.9 points per game, but still posted a 55-41 Section 3 win against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (6-15, 5-6). T.J. Heatherington scored 24 points and Pat Grubbs added 19 in the win.

Boys' milestone

Ryan Sabo of Steel Valley (13-5, 5-3) tallied 17 points to give him 1,008 for his career, and the Ironmen posted a 68-58 Class AAA Section 5 win against Elizabeth Forward (5-16, 1-7).

Girls' milestone

Nakia DeBlanc of Woodland Hills (14-7, 8-2) scored 19 points to push her career total to 1,004 in its 63-22 Class AAAA Section 2 win against Gateway (7-12, 3-8).
