Perfect game lifts Canon-Mac in WPIAL softball playoffs

The only loss for Canon-McMillan was to Hempfield early in the season. The Big Macs avenged it in a perfect way.

Alayna Astuto pitched a perfect game as Canon-McMillan beat Hempfield, 5-0, in a WPIAL Class AAA semifinal Thursday night at California University. Canon-McMillan (20-1) will go after its second consecutive championship Thursday against North Allegheny.

Astuto struck out seven and lifted her season record to 19-0. Hempfield (17-6) fell behind, 2-0, after the first inning and never recovered.

Canon-McMillan had 10 hits against Spartans pitcher Hope Pehrson. Linda Rush was 3 for 3, Giorgiana Zeremenko had three RBIs and Olivia Lorusso two.

Class AAA

• Greensburg Salem 3, West Allegheny 2: In the completion of Wednesday's suspended Class AAA semifinal, Greensburg Salem defeated West Allegheny in 10 innings at California. Jayne Oberdorf was the winning pitcher and also singled in the winning run in the top of the 10th. The game was suspended Wednesday with Greensburg Salem leading, 2-0, in the top of the fifth.
