Paul Chryst made official Thursday what had been assumed for months, naming Chad Voytik as Pitt's starting quarterback for the season opener against Delaware Aug. 30.
Voytik, a redshirt sophomore, took every snap with the first team during training camp but said earning the official designation of "starter" still felt good.
"Just to be named, it's an honor and I'm so excited to play in nine days," he said. "It's crazy."
Voytik played in four games last year, including the second half of Pitt's 30-27 Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl victory against Bowling Green. In that game, he filled in for an injured Tom Savage and completed five of nine passes for 108 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.
"I think he’s proud, and he should be, of the work he’s done," Chryst said.
