Pirates' Cervelli did not suffer broken bone in foot against Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Francisco Cervelli did not suffer a broken bone Friday night when he took a pitch off his right foot while catching, according to a source.

Juan Nicasio’s eighth-inning pitch hit Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett’s pant leg before hitting Cervelli in the inside of the right foot. He was down behind the plate in pain before being helped off the field, without putting any weight on his right leg.

Cervelli missed more than a month earlier this season because of a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. It is unknown how long the injury Friday night will keep him out, if at all. Eric Fryer replaced Cervelli behind the plate Friday. Chris Stewart (knee) has increased activity but has not yet begun a rehab assignment. The Pirates recently optioned Elias Diaz to Class AAA Indianapolis.
