Francisco Cervelli had surgery today to repair a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, the result of a hard swing during Friday night’s game. He will be out until after the All-Star break.
The Pirates went to the trade market for a backup catcher, acquiring Erik Kratz from the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.
Cervelli left the game after swinging at the first pitch in his plate appearance in the fourth inning Friday. He dropped the bat out of his left hand and looked like he knew something was wrong. Chris Stewart, who will likely assume the starting role, replaced him.
At Allegheny General Hospital today, Cervelli had surgery to excise and remove a broken hook of the hamate bone, a small bone in the palm on the pinky side of the hand. Hamate fractures are somewhat common in baseball players.
Kratz, 35, debuted with the Pirates in 2010 and has played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros. He also spent time in the Seattle Mariners farm system.
