Prospect Alen Hanson expected to be called up to join Pirates for first time

CHICAGO — The Pirates are prepared to promote a prospect to the majors for the first time this season, but it’s neither Jameson Taillon nor Tyler Glasnow. This phone call is for Alen Hanson.

Hanson likely will step in for Starling Marte, who disclosed he will be going on the paternity list Monday. Hanson’s impending promotion was first reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and then confirmed by LA Sports Management, Hanson’s agency.

“Congrats [on] the well deserved call up for Alen Hanson to the Pittsburgh Pirates!” the agency wrote in a tweet. “Worked his entire life for this opportunity! See you manana.”

Hanson, 23, is a speedy middle infielder who also has played plenty of outfield this spring. He is batting .288 with three doubles, two triples and two home runs in 27 games at Class AAA Indianapolis. In two seasons with the Indians, he has 42 stolen bases on 57 tries.

Marte started Sunday in a series finale against the Chicago Cubs. The Pirates return to PNC Park Monday for a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
