Gateway prevails in overtime vs. Fox Chapel

After blowing a 12-point, fourth-quarter lead on the road, Class AAAA No. 5 Gateway showed its perseverance.

Tom Kromka had 17 points and the Gators (9-3, 5-0) prevailed against Fox Chapel (10-2, 3-2), 58-56, in overtime Wednesday night in Section 2.

After leading by two at halftime, Gateway outscored Fox Chapel, 21-11, in the third quarter to take a commanding lead into the fourth quarter.

But the Foxes rallied to send the game into overtime, where they had a chance to win it. Billy Urso, who had 15 points and hit three 3-pointers, missed a shot beyond the arc at the buzzer.

Matt D'Amico led Fox Chapel with 20 points.

Delvon Randall added 14 points for the Gators.

■ Thomas Steve scored 13 points and Will Ross added 11 in a 59-45 victory for Upper St. Clair (8-3, 4-0) against visiting Peters Township (5-6, 2-3) in Class AAAA, Section 4.

■ Chase Migliore led five Blackhawk players in double figures with 17 points as the Cougars (5-6, 4-0) vaulted atop the Class AAA Section 2 standings with a 68-56 victory against visiting Ambridge (7-4, 1-2).

■ Class AA No. 2 Beaver Falls (9-2, 5-0) got 19 points from Javon Turner in a 71-48 victory against visiting Mohawk (5-6, 1-4) in Section 2.

Stars of the night

■ Nick Miller scored 25 points to lead Class A No. 3 Western Beaver (9-1) to a 69-39 victory against visiting Burgettstown (2-8) in non-section action. Miller came in averaging 31 points per game.

■ Taymon Russell scored 15 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as Northgate (4-6, 2-2) rallied from a 21-point deficit in the final 13 minutes to beat visiting Sto-Rox (4-7, 1-3), 78-73, in Class AA Section 6.

Top girls games

■ Led by Madison Serio's 19 points, Class AAAA No. 4 Upper St. Clair (8-1, 3-1) held off visiting Canon-McMillan (5-7, 1-3), 63-61, in Section 4.

■ In Class AAAA Section 2, Plum (8-2, 4-0) defeated host Penn Hills (5-6, 2-2), 58-45, in overtime behind 23 points from Krista Pietropola.

■ Sara Getsy scored 17 points to help host Mars (7-5, 4-0) rally from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Hampton (6-5, 3-1), 47-44, in a battle of the top two teams in Class AAA Section 1.

■ Nicolete Newman and Morgan Henderson each scored 16 points to lead Class AA No. 1 Seton-LaSalle (8-3, 3-0) to a 78-34 win against No. 3 Brentwood (10-1, 3-1).
