Penguins Orpik, Malkin are named alternate captains

HELSINKI, Finland -- Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Brooks Orpik were named alternate captains by coach Michel Therrien today.

Later, the Penguins won their final exhibition game, 4-1 over Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League. Malkin had a power play goal and center Sidney Crosby had three assists.

Center Max Talbot did not play because of a bruised leg, but team doctors cleared him to play in the team's regular season opener Saturday against Ottawa in Stockholm, Sweden.

The team also announced that defenseman Segei Gonchar had successful arthroscopic surgery on his damaged left shoulder

Forward Ryan Stone, who was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last week, was placed on waivers.
