BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates today trimmed 12 players from their major league spring training roster, including -- unsurprisingly -- left-hander Dan Moskos, their first-round draft pick last June.

"I kind of knew my days were numbered,'' Moskos said.

Moskos probably will begin this season at low Class A Hickory.

Also sent to minor league camp are right-handed pitchers Jimmy Barthmaier, Ronald Belisario, Oliva Astacio, Romulo Sanchez, Adam Bernero, Yoslan Herrera, Jesse Chavez and Luis Munoz, left-hander Dave Davidson, catcher Miguel Perez and infielder Jose Macias.

The Pirates this morning also told highly regarded prospect Steve Pearce that he will concentrate solely on playing the outfield, primarily right field, instead of splitting time between first base, his natural position, and the outfield.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
