Your guide to tomorrow's implosion of Three Rivers Stadium Saturday, February 10, 2001 Graphics by Daniel Marsula, James Hilston and Steve Thomas
In a span of 19 seconds on Sunday morning Feb. 11, the empty concrete shell of Three Rivers Stadium - home to four Super Bowl and two World Series champions - will join the list of things that aren't there anymore. The implosion is being done by specialty contractor Controlled Demolition Inc. of Phoenix, Md. Doug Loizeaux, vice president of CDI and son of its founder, said reducing the stadium to rubble is a massive job. "It's like the old analogy of how do you eat an elephant. You do it one bite at a time."
Building preparation
General contractor Bianchi Trison Corp. of Syracuse, N.Y., has been on site since before Christmas and has transformed the stadium by stripping away everything in the building that does not support the superstructure. Asbestos also has been removed. The lower bowl is all but gone, and the upper bowl will fall in the implosion.
