The Pennsylvania Senate Race: Those who would be senator
Sunday, March 26, 2000
Six Pennsylvania Democrats are united in one goal -- wresting a U.S. Senate seat from incumbent Republican Rick Santorum.
They are divided on who is best equipped to oust the conservative freshman senator.
Until recently, their competition has had a fairly low profile, overshadowed by presidential politics and muted by the candidates' relatively modest resources.
But now, in the closing days before the April 4 primary election, the contenders' commercials are an increasing presence on the airwaves and the candidates are debating nearly every other day. Santorum is unopposed in the GOP primary.
Today in the Post-Gazette, we profile the Democrats who hope to carry their party's banner against him in November.
