Barbara White Stack, 45, covers abused, neglected and delinquent children for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Before that, she served as an assistant city editor and urban affairs reporter. She joined the newspaper in 1979 after working for the Beaver County Times and the Greensburg Tribune-Review.
A native of Bucks County, Stack is a journalism graduate of Penn State University.
She has received numerous local, state and national reporting awards.
Her last major project was a seven-part series in 1998 about trends in foster care and adoption.

Staff Photographer Annie O'Neill, 33, has worked for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for 4 1/2 years.
In that time, she has twice been named Pennsylvania Photographer of the Year and twice Pittsburgh Photographer of the Year.
Before coming to Pittsburgh, she worked for the Detroit News.
A 1992 graduate of the University of Missouri, O'Neill's last major project for the Post-Gazette was a photo essay last spring depicting a trip on Route 19 from the Gulf of Mexico to Pennsylvania.
