Jeannette man pleads guilty in $2.4 million gas-rights fraud

A Jeannette man pleaded guilty today to a role in a scheme in which he and an accomplice tricked gas companies into paying them some $2.4 million for gas rights on properties that they did not control.

Derek A. Candelore, 33, is set to be sentenced Jan. 31 by U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab on one count of mail fraud.

He and William J. Ray, 29, of Monroeville, were accused of creating and filing fake deeds transferring mineral rights to fictitious companies they created. They sold the rights, mostly to Range Resources of Fort Worth, Texas, until the company discovered that the documents were bogus.

Mr. Ray pleaded guilty in September and was scheduled for sentencing Jan. 10.
