The Pirates activated outfielder Jose Tabata from the disabled list this afternoon and optioned right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Tabata was placed on the disabled list May 25 after sustaining a strained left oblique. He was hitting .272 with two home runs and six RBIs in 36 games prior to the injury. He hit .179 in nine rehabilitation games for Indianapolis.

Cumpton picked up his first career loss in a spot start for the Pirates on Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He made three spot starts for the Pirates this season as the team struggled to maintain pitching depth after experiencing a rash of injuries.
