Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett delivers a pitch against the Atlanta Braves earlier this month.

The Pirates put A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list today because of a strained right calf and released right-hander Jose Contreras.
The moves cleared space on the active and 40-man rosters for Charlie Morton, who will start tonight's game.
Burnett, who has a 3.12 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 891/3 innings, was scheduled to start Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jeff Locke will start Friday instead of Saturday as he was scheduled to. The Pirates have not yet announced who will start Saturday in Locke's place.
In Burnett's most recent start, he pitched 81/3 innings of two-run ball against the Chicago Cubs.
"He made us aware of it yesterday," Clint Hurdle said.
Contreras was on the 15-day DL because of back pain.
