The Pirates optioned outfielder Jose Tabata to Class AAA Indianapolis this afternoon and have recalled Gorkys Hernandez.
Tabata, who signed a six-year contract worth a guaranteed $14.75 million last season, was hitting .230 with a .295 on-base percentage this season. He hit three home runs, three triples, 13 doubles and struck out 43 times.
Hernandez made his major league debut in May and had two hits in 10 at bats with two RBIs and a run. He hit .268 with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 25 RBIs in 64 games with Class AAA Indianapolis. He also had 13 stolen bases.
The move is also a sign that the front office believes top-tier prospect Starling Marte, hitting .291 with a .349 on-base percentage and 35 extra-base hits in Indianapolis, still has work to do before he is ready to make his major-league debut.
