The Pirates reassigned pitcher Gerrit Cole to minor league camp today, the team announced in a news release.
The first overall pick in the 2011 draft was a non-roster invite to major league camp. He appeared in two intraqsuad scrimmages this spring.
The move was expected, as Cole is more than a year away from competing for a spot in the major league rotation.
General manager Neal Huntington said the team made the move to give Cole more opportunities to pitch this spring. Most innings at major league camp will be pitched by players competing for a spot on the Pirates' opening day roster.
Huntington said he was glad Cole got a chance to participate in major league camp so the team could expose him to the clubhouse culture.
As he was leaving, Cole walked around the clubhouse, shaking hands with teammates.
"I got fired," he joked. "It's all right."
