The Pirates today traded infielder Andy Phillips to the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Michael Dubee in an exchange of minor leaguers.
Dubee, 23, never has pitched above high Class A. Last season, he was 5-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 30 appearances, including 13 starts, for Class A Winston-Salem. This season, he made two relief appearances, with a 6.00 ERA.
The move was aimed primarily at clearing space for newly demoted Luis Cruz to play in the infield for Class AAA Indianapolis.
Cruz's demotion was to clear space for new outfielder Delwyn Young, a move that had been expected with Young's arrival this afternoon.
Cruz, 24, made one appearance and went 1 for 2 at the plate.
