With the general manager's job open in Boston, Dave Littlefield's name surfaced as a possible candidate in a story last week in The Boston Globe.
The Red Sox, however, have not contacted the Pirates for permission to interview Littlefield, and permission likely would be denied if they did.
Littlefield is attending the World Series in San Francisco with Lloyd McClendon and several other Pirates officials, but he won't be talking with Red Sox President Larry Lucchino about the Boston job, now held on an interim basis by Mike Port.
Littlefield has three years remaining on a contract with the Pirates.
"I have not been contacted," Littlefield said yesterday. "I have challenges to finish here first."
