A daily look at the Pirates' World Series championship season 20 years ago:

July 5, 1979

St. Louis rookie John Fulgham gave up nine hits and struck out four as the Cardinals won, 2-0, to end the Pirates' three-game winning streak. It was Fulgham's first shutout and second major-league victory.

The Cardinals (39-37) scored both runs in the first inning on a Lou Brock single, Keith Hernandez's double and George Hendrick's single.

Bill Madlock went 3 for 4 for the Pirates (40-35), who stranded nine runners. Madlock was 7 for 12 since joining the Pirates.
