WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has what is believed to be a lower-leg injury.
Letang, a finalist last season for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman, apparently got hurt during a practice Friday. He did not practice today.
Coach Dan Bylsma said it has not been determined whether Letang will be out on a short-term or long-term basis. Letang will not practice Sunday and will be further evaluated when the Penguins return home.
The Penguins are spending a long weekend at the U.S. Military Academy for practices, a chance to spend time with the cadets and team-bonding exercises. They are scheduled to return home Monday.
They open the season Thursday against New Jersey at Consol Energy Center.
