The Penguins have signed forward Nick Johnson to a one-year, two-way contract worth $550,000 at the NHL level.

Johnson, 25, was eligible for unrestricted free agency if he had not re-signed before July 1.

He spent most of last season with the Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate, Wilkes-Barre-Scranton, where he had 20 goals, 39 points in 48 games. He played in three games with the Penguins, posting a goal and two assists, before his season was cut short by a concussion.

Johnson was a third-round draft pick by the Penguins in 2004 and played at Dartmouth before turning pro.
