It seems that just about everyone except President Donald Trump and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt understands that the changing climate is the most significant threat to the citizens of the United States and of the world.
It is also known, with absolute scientific certainty, that greenhouse gases emitted by humans are the primary cause of this threat. Continuing business as usual will certainly lead to significant sea level rise; increases in storms, droughts, floods, disease and starvation; and major loss of property.
To do what Mr. Trump and Mr. Pruitt advocate will result in a huge amount of human suffering and loss of life. The effect this will have on their grandchildren should be enough to cause them to change direction.
However, if the administration continues to place the needs of the coal, oil and gas industries above the needs of the rest of us, the only real solution will be to place a cost on these carbon products.
The proposals by the Republican Climate Leadership Council and by the Citizens Climate Lobby would require that carbon fuels have a fee placed on them and all of the money collected would be returned to the citizens. This approach would generate a market-based solution to the greenhouse gas problem and would effectively counter the regressive policies of the Trump administration. Thus the problem would have a solution that does not require government regulations.
It is now more important than ever that both parties in Congress take action on this critically important issue.
