Decriminalizing drugs might help a host of problems disappear

Regarding “Officials Seek to Derail Rise in Homicides: Drugs a Common Thread, Police Say” (Aug. 5): What if we decriminalized drugs? Many of our problems would disappear — drug wars, gangs, territorial disputes, thefts and all the resulting murders and drive-by shootings. The entire illegal black market would disappear because drugs would be available in normal, regulated commercial channels.

But … would the increase in drug-related fatalities from abuse and overdose be more than the current number of drug-related murders? (In Pittsburgh, 44 so far this year.) Probably not. Just sayin’ …
