I have been a member of the Homewood-Brushton community for all of my 58 years. I remember a time when there were thriving vibrant business establishments here that not only allowed residents to shop in their own neighborhood but also provided jobs and a sense of pride for our community. Those businesses went by the wayside due to people moving and shopping in the suburbs, most notably Monroeville Mall.
Now to my dismay, I have read in your paper that millions of dollars are being allocated for East Liberty, Garfield and Larimer to support their business districts, but not one mention of Homewood. Councilman Ricky Burgess and Rep. Ed Gainey have been ineffective and gone along with the flow of allowing the disenfranchising of Homewood instead of demanding money to rebuild this once-thriving neighborhood.
