Shinseki as ‘fall guy’

What an informative column by Dan Simpson on the “dismissal” of Gen. Eric K. Shinseki as secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (“Shinseki Deserved a Better Ending,” June 4). As American taxpaying citizens, we need to be aware of the facts contained in this commentary. It certainly appears Gen. Shinseki was the “fall guy” for a VA system that is badly in need of restructuring.

I agree with Mr. Simpson. The three functions of the VA need to be disaggregated — they truly are not compatible.

It’s sad that Gen. Shinseki’s career (one of long and noble service to his country) was ended in such a shameful manner.

As Mr. Simpson states, Gen. Shinseki’s “dismissal” “goes some distance in explaining why America finds serious, conscientious leaders hard to come by and ends up instead with ambitious, greedy careerists.”

Let’s be mindful of these issues in the polling booth.
