I find disgustingly partisan the contortions your editorial has gone through to make Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl a model soldier in light of emerging facts (“Fair Exchange: An American POW Is Reunited With His Family,” June 3). In actuality, facts indicate that Mr. Bergdahl deserted his guard post — thus endangering his fellow soldiers — possibly by creeping under a wire fence and that he went AWOL. In their search for him six other American soldiers were killed.
His fellow soldiers describe a malcontent who regularly disparaged the war effort, his army and his country. This questionable war hero was traded for five well-known Taliban leaders with horrific atrocities attributed to them and who will most certainly return to the battlefield.
Yes, I was overjoyed at first, but now I feel it would be better to trade his Afghan prison for a federal prison for deserters and those gone AWOL.
