We are writing in response to the editorial “Warning Blast: RiverQuest’s Mission Has Hit Rough Water” (April 26). We think somebody should fund RiverQuest because RiverQuest taught us about our rivers and different subjects such as botany, zoology and topology. RiverQuest staff are smart, nice and actually care about the education they give us and the health of the rivers.
The high-tech boat is a very sustainable boat because it has solar panels on top. The boat has many microscopes and light boxes. RiverQuest gives access to boats to kids who might never have been on a boat before. We learned boat safety as well as the scientific method.
We have learned a lot from RiverQuest. During our ride, the staff asked if we thought our rivers were polluted. Almost everyone in our class said “yes.” After we tested the pH and turbidity and we saw what invertebrates lived in different locations of the river, we figured out our rivers weren’t polluted. We only could have learned this from RiverQuest. We hope someone will take this under consideration and keep RiverQuest “afloat.”
