Officials’ pay can be a reflection of commitment

With Mayor Bill Peduto’s announcement that the city’s finances are in dire shape (“Mayor Warns of Stark Budget Times,” May 14), I thought he and others in his administration could mirror Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant’s commitment to the people she represents. Ms. Sawant has made good on her campaign pledge to accept only a $40,000 per year salary (Seattle council members are paid $117,000 per year).

If the mayor and other administrative personnel were to do the same, it wouldn’t end the budget problem, but at least they would be seen as putting every effort into fixing it. If the citizens of Pittsburgh are to expect cuts in services, shouldn’t those who will make those cuts have the courage to lead by example?
