In his May 3 letter “Vile Free Speech,” Doug Bricker perpetuates what has become an epidemic misunderstanding of when the free speech clause of the First Amendment is implicated.

The First Amendment prohibits the making of any law abridging the freedom of speech. It was designed to protect citizens from laws that “chill” speech. As the government has done nothing to “chill” Donald Sterling’s speech, the First Amendment is not implicated.
