Once again Republicans have indicated their concern about raising the minimum wage (“GOP Blocks Senate Bid to Raise Minimum Wage,” May 1). Perhaps it is time for Republican leaders to demonstrate in a practical way why the current minimum ought to be a sufficient wage. To that end I suggest they accept only the minimum hourly wage for themselves and their staffs. And since everyone knows they work only part-time in Washington, D.C., they should declare that they will not accept any medical or pension benefits.
Additionally, given how adamantly opposed Republicans are to equal pay for equal work, the salaries for men would be 70 percent that of women.
Lastly, the money saved could easily be diverted to cover the costs of extending unemployment benefits or increasing the food stamp program.
Such simple steps to take for a party so intent on the good of the nation.
