I still can’t believe the hateful letter by Nick Kyriazi printed April 6 (“Welfare Encourages Irresponsible Behavior”). He pretty much compared the current welfare system and the people on it as causing everything from crime to filthy cities. He indicates that people on welfare have become a “heart disease” and a “cancer” on society and blames them for any and all ills in our society. He calls people on welfare an “underclass that doesn’t understand the basic tenets of civilized behavior,” as if people on welfare were animals with no redeeming qualities.
In my 59 years, I have never read a more hateful, narrow-minded, ignorant letter in the Post-Gazette.
He finishes his letter by saying that “we are doomed.” Obviously Mr. Kyriazi has been blessed more than many other people when he states that people should depend on their churches and families for charity and that welfare is theft.
For those who need these benefits, welfare is not the picnic Mr. Kyriazi seems to think it is. I doubt Mr. Kyriazi will ever truly know how desperate a person can feel when having to ask for welfare. And, no, the recipients of these benefits are not the animals he indicates they are.
I truly hope that his circumstances never reach the point to where he becomes absolutely desperate and has to ask for welfare. For many, being on welfare eats away at the soul.
