Being born and raised in Pittsburgh, I moved to Florida in 1985 just out of high school. I come back to visit periodically, but my most recent trip to the city at the end of March was an eye-opener for me.
Driving around town, it was shocking to see the abundance of litter thrown along the roads. The vast majority of the thoroughfares were lined with layers of garbage, truly taking away from the city’s beauty.
In Florida, it is common practice that highways and roads are adopted by a company or group that will donate their time to clean up the litter. In return, a sign is posted on the road with the company or group name. This program has helped enhance the landscape of our towns. Although Pennsylvania has a similar program, is it used as widely as it could be?
I hope Pittsburgh will make an effort to reduce littering.
