Retiring Jolly Roger

As a consummate Pittsburgh sports fan, I am bewildered about the recent change announced by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization of eliminating the “Pirate” logo and instead going with “P” (“Buccaneer Retired as Face of Pirates,” Jan. 9).

As every breathing human being is aware, the Pittsburgh Pirates had a record-setting losing streak in all professional sports until last season. The euphoria that spread not only around Pittsburgh but around the country was mind-boggling. At the end of Pirates games, you would hear people yell, “Raise the Jolly Roger!”

Now, the powers that be in the front office think we need to change things and will from now on consider the “P” the official logo of the Pirates. Really? The Pirates finally have rabid fans and momentum and you want to do something as idiotic as this?

I think there are other issues such as signing some star players for the long term that need to be addressed instead of taking the wind out of our Jolly Roger flags.
