I shook my head in disgust after glancing at the Jan. 7 Post-Gazette feature “Who You Should Know in the New Year.” Of the 14 individuals highlighted in the article, only one is African-American. The article states the readers should get to know these people because they “will shape the future of the region.”

The sole African-American is a freshman on the Pittsburgh Panthers basketball team.

A few years ago, the Heinz Endowments funded two studies indicating that the Pittsburgh media portrayed African-American men and boys in an unbalanced light. In short, the studies concluded that most television and news articles about African-American males in Pittsburgh centered on crime or sports.

As we begin 2014, the Post Gazette appears to have done nothing to shed this perpetual image of unbalanced and unenlightened media coverage.
