‘The Fan’ errs

The news story chronicling the changes at 93.7 The Fan (KDKA-FM) was like the Grinch coming early with a lump of coal for the stocking of the Pittsburgh listening sports fan base (“Changes Hit the ‘Fan’ Lineup,” Dec. 19). The absence of Vinnie Richichi midday and for the Saturday Pirates weekly show will create a void of both a knowledgeable and an objective talk-show host.

Mr. Richichi’s versatility throughout the pantheon of sports want-to-bes helped keep a perspective that this medium is merely an entertainment diversion to the important facets of life. Although he has worked in various markets throughout the country (another plus with respect to the perspective he brought to 93.7), I got the impression he really felt at home here in Pittsburgh.

My hope for the new year is that another Pittsburgh outlet will find a way to make an offer that will keep him in this listening area. If not, thank you, Vinnie, for providing a breath of fresh air amidst the plethora of sports reporters from whom one could choose to receive their information.
