Cab never showed

Have you ordered a Yellow Cab lately? I did, two days in advance, to take me from Shadyside to the 7 a.m. Megabus to Washington, D.C., for Thanksgiving. I called again the night before I was to leave to confirm my order for 6:15 a.m.

I waited at the door to my building, but the taxi never arrived, despite three phone calls to Yellow Cab and four to other cab companies. I got the same dispatcher for each, who explained that drivers are independent contractors who decide which orders to pick up. There was no guarantee that any would respond and none did, so I missed the bus.

Is that any way to run a taxi business or a railroad or anything else? I was lucky to get a seat on the 4 p.m. Megabus but, even with a previously purchased round-trip ticket, it cost me extra. That’s the last time I rely on a chartered cab company.
