Tense time of year

What has happened to the holidays? Everything has become so commercial. Money seems to be the crux of the whole thing. People are participating in a contest for a prize for the most dazzling decorated house. Shoppers want to see which stores are offering the best bargains, thus causing clerks to work while the merchants are at home enjoying the day, etc. As a result, tensions build. Where’s the fun in all this?

I’m not a Grinch, but I come from a generation when the Christmas parade after Thanksgiving was the start of the holiday shopping season. Now things start much too early. I suppose that’s where all this grumpiness is coming from.

Anyway, happy holidays! One cannot even say “Merry Christmas” anymore. Bah, humbug!
