A hero to us

Reading the lengthy obituary for Dr. George J. Magovern on Thursday ("Pioneering Heart Surgeon, Inventor," Nov. 7 news obituary) -- long because of his many accomplishments and honors -- I was taken back to 1960, early in his career.

My beloved late wife, Helen, was suffering congestive heart problems and our seven children and I were afraid we would lose her. We were directed to Dr. Magovern, who with innovative surgery successfully changed Helen's life and health so much so that we had another child five years later. And he gave Helen another 29 years of life.

I appreciate all the things Dr. Magovern accomplished, but as you can understand, he is a hero to our family. God loaned him to us and now is taking him back for eternal honors. His family can be rightfully proud of this wonderful man.
