Thanks for the editorial (May 12) criticizing the way partisan redistricting results in rigged elections. Most of us would be furious if someone denied us the right to vote, but we acquiesce passively as we watch politically motivated redistricting commissions render our votes meaningless. The current process deliberately creates safe districts, and therefore the elections are not competitive and do not hold legislators accountable.
The citizens of California revised their constitution to require a truly independent redistricting commission, and the result after the 2010 census was a fair and equitable redistricting process.
There are several bills working their way through the Pennsylvania House and Senate proposing to similarly amend our constitution. Pennsylvanians should support these efforts to restore the value of our votes.
