We already have thousands of gun laws that have failed

After reading the PG editorial "Scourge of the NRA" (April 19) and letters from the PG's minions regarding the Senate vote on background checks, I just had to respond. What don't you all get about the abject failure of the thousands of "gun laws" already on the books? Why are the senators who voted against this attempt at a "first step" of creating a national gun registry all cowards? Because they had the courage to disagree with you?

How about you all take a lesson from two of my personal American heroes: Candi Lightner and John Walsh. Both of these great Americans saved countless numbers of lives by demanding that those who perpetrate the crimes are punished, not the millions of law-abiding Americans who supported their efforts.

Candi Lightner never went after Detroit automakers, drivers or automobiles but went to her state legislature and demanded that it take drunken driving seriously. She rallied millions of average American moms to create MADD. Not only average Americans, but politicians, athletes, entertainment figures, etc., are all subject to the strict consequences of driving while drunk.

Ditto for John Walsh, who created a national television show that led to the capture of hundreds of pedophiles, murderers, wife-beaters and the like. He exposed the people who committed the crime, not the method that was used.

My message to all of you who supposedly care so much about gun violence is this: Why don't you show some courage yourselves and deal with the violent criminals and the mentally unstable and actually support enforcing the thousands of gun laws already on the books? You keep reminding us about the terrible tragedy at Sandy Hook, but I don't hear a peep out of you about the hundreds of innocent "people of color" who are killed with illegal guns every day in our major cities. People in glass houses ...
