Big Bird helps to educate the nation's children

As a retired elementary teacher, I was incredulous when I heard Mitt Romney proclaim that "I'm gonna stop the subsidy to PBS," even though he admitted, "I like PBS, I like Big Bird." I challenge Mr. Romney to tell the children of this country that Big Bird and "Sesame Street" will no longer be part of their lives. Mr. Romney, where is your heart?

His statement also illustrates a fundamental difference between what Mr. Romney and President Barack Obama stand for -- the obligation of government to provide basic services to its people. Public television not only serves to educate and inform our citizens, but it also provides that helping hand -- free of charge -- to our youngest citizens.

How many children would have entered school without the basics of letters and numbers were it not for "Sesame Street"? Big Bird should live on!
