Saturday Poem / No wonder

Time, Harper's, Post-Gazette,
NPR, Meet the Press, nightly news
make me worry my grandchildren
won't be able to afford college.
Programs cut. Tuition up. Meanwhile,
ousted Penn State President Spanier
of Sandusky-child-sex-abuse-scandal fame
takes home $600,000, while one in five
proud-to-be-American children live in poverty.
Private prison industry counts boys
who can't read by the end of third grade
to know how many jail cells they'll need. No wonder
I can't write about Philodendron,
painting a wall lavender, the new coat
I'm buying to enhance my casual elegance.
