When I was in the hospital —

a vessel in my heart clogged — and

after they said “Don’t worry,

we fixed it,”

I believed them.

Reading, patiently, in

Room D820, I reached over for

the HeadUp button.

I felt something wet —

not cold, not hot, just

curiously moist.

When I looked down,

my hand was red.

Before all this, I had a passing dread

of dire consequences.

But at the actual sight of blood —

from a pulled-out IV —

strange,

I didn’t feel a thing.
