Hospital pricing

In reading the discrepancies in prices between John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and UPMC Passavant, (“Hospital Charges Can Vary Widely,” Feb. 16), what I have been thinking was put into focus.

What Obamacare and the Democrats have done wrong in seeking to give everyone access to hospitals and insurance was to start at the wrong end. It’s called the “affordable” care act! Start by monitoring and capping how much hospitals can charge for a procedure and stop the silly game they play: “While the procedure cost $1,000, we accepted your insurance payment of $500.” So then what did it cost? Apparently it cost $500, didn’t it?

Certainly there is more to this whole business, including medical equipment, sales of drugs, insurance expenses, tax exemptions. The whole thing is too big and totally out of control.
