Peter E. Hackney, a commercial real estate executive involved in office and industrial deals throughout the city and region, died April 25 at a clinic in Houston where he was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. He was 45.
A resident of Shadyside, Mr. Hackney spent the bulk of his career with Grubb & Ellis, a Downtown brokerage firm. He started there in the early 1980s as a leasing manager for major properties, including Four North Shore Center, Centre City Tower and the former Gimbels department store when it was renovated for office space.
In 1997, he joined Scott Brothers Realty in Fox Chapel, where he handled leasing and sales of commercial and industrial buildings.
Gregg Scott, the owner of Scott Brothers, said Mr. Hackney made the jump from a large, prominent brokerage to a tiny, family-owned business "because I think he wanted to be more independent and do different things."
"As a business person he had a wonderful, classic, old-world style," said Scott. "He was the type of guy you could do a handshake with and you knew you had his word."
Mr. Hackney graduated from Shady Side Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in business from Babson College. He worked for several years in the insurance industry before going into real estate.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen Gray Hackney; two sons, Barret and Christopher; his father and step-mother, William P. and Myrna Hackney; a sister, Jeanne Hackney Kingsland; and a brother, W. Penn Hackney.
Friends will be received from 3 to 4 p.m. today at Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Amberson Avenue at Westminster Place. A memorial service will follow.
Funeral arrangements are by John A. Freyvogel Sons Funeral Home, Shadyside.
