PG Benchmarks team

Eleanor Chute has been a Post-Gazette reporter since 1993 and an education writers since 1997. She worked for The Pittsburgh Press from 1975 to 1992, including four years as an education writer. Chute, 46, is a 1975 graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., where she majored in journalism and economics.

Douglas Heuck, 37, is the Post-Gazette Business Editor. Prior to conceiving PG Benchmarks, he was an investigative reporter, penning 12 series for the PG and Pittsburgh Press on topics ranging from the homeless to Jonas Salk to the lives of children in city schools. He has won first place in three national writing contests and also twice won the G. Richard Dew Award for public service, the highest honor given by the Pa. Newspaper Publishers Assn. He has won three Keystone Distinguished Writing Awards, given annually for the best newspaper writing in the state. Heuck is a graduate of Kenyon College.

Carmen J. Lee, 37, has been a reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette since 1985. She has been covering education for the newspaper since 1993. Before that, she reported on several areas for the PG, including religion, higher education and suburban news. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University, Bloomington Ind., in 1983 and master’s degree in journalism from Indiana in 1988.

Daniel Marsula, has been a staff artist for the Post-Gazette since 1990, after working 14 years at The Pittsburgh Press. During his time at the PG, he has received numerous illustration awards including: National Headliners (first place) Keystone Press Awards (first place) and Awards of Excellence from the Society for News Design.

Steve Thomas, has designed graphics for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette since August of 1998. Before coming the to PG he was a student at Ohio University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communications specializing in Informational Graphics and Page Design. In the College Graphics Reporting and News Art Competition of 1998 (sponsored by the Philadelphia Inquirer and administered by the SND chapter at Ball State University) he received an award for a graphic completed while in school.

Steve Urbanski, has designed PG Benchmarks since 1998. He joined the Post-Gazette as a page design editor in 1993 after working at The Pittsburgh Press. He has held various editorial positions at The Sun-Tattler in Hollywood Fla., the Dallas Times-Herald, the Uniontown Herald-Standard, the Punxsutawney Spirit, the Sayre (Pa.) Evening Times and the Grafton (W.Va.) Mountain Statesman. He received a bachelor’s in journalism from West Virginia University and a master’s in communication from Duquesne University.

Jane Elizabeth Zemel, 43, local news editor for education, joined the PG five years ago. A graduate of Radford (Va.) University, she also holds a master’s degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University. From 1978-1994, she worked for newspapers in Richmond, Va., where she won numerous state and national awards for reporting on education and other issues. She was awarded a fellowship last year from the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at the University of Maryland. She also teaches journalism at the University of Pittsburgh.
