Britain has granted political asylum to a prominent Belarussian dissident and former presidential candidate, Andrei Sannikov, his wife said Friday. Mr. Sannikov, who was imprisoned for 15 months after challenging Belarus's autocratic president, Aleksandr G. Lukashenko, in presidential elections in 2010, told the Charter 97 news service that he had fled the country in order to avoid arrest. Mr. Sannikov's wife, Iryna Khalip, has been barred from traveling outside Belarus.
