PennDOT is alerting motorists to new lane shifts on Route 28 southbound beginning Friday morning.
The new traffic configuration will affect the area between the 31st Street Bridge and the Chestnut Street overpass, weather permitting, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The new traffic pattern will begin at 5 a.m. Friday when two southbound lanes and one northbound lane will be shifted into a side-by-side position along a newly constructed wall.
The right-hand southbound lane will no longer be dedicated to the East Ohio Street exit. Both southbound lanes will continue toward the North Shore. The dedicated exit ramp to East Ohio Street will be re-established.
To allow for the new configuration, tonight beginning at 8 there will be intermittent traffic stoppages and all southbound traffic must exit at the East Ohio Street ramp. Traffic will be detoured.
The work is part of the $15.4 million final phase of Route 28 construction.
